The production of conidiophores and conidia by newly germinated conidia of Aspergillus niger (microcycle conidiation).

چکیده
The ability of Aspergillus niger conidia to produce conidiophores after germination in shaken culture at 30" was stimulated by the inclusion of glutamate in the medium. Incubation of the conidia at 35" to 41" increased swelling of the conidia and also the proportion which produced conidiophores. Although conidio phore initiation was stimulated at temperatures between 35" and 41 ", maturation was poor and optimum conidiation was obtained by incubation at these temperatures followed by 30". Conidiophore formation from conidia required a prior period of spore metabolism and at temperatures between 30" and 41 " did not occur until several hours after germination. Direct conidiophore production from conidia in the complete absence of vegetative growth was achieved by incubation of the conidia at 44" (which allows only swelling) for a prolonged period (48 h.) followed by 30". Although vegetative growth was absent the conidiophores were similar to, but smaller than, normal subaerial conidiophores and viable conidia were produced. These conidia differed from subaerial spores in lacking the dark pigmented spore coat.

Microcycle Conidiation in Cercospora zeae-maydis.
ABSTRACT Conidia of Cercospora zeae-maydis are the primary inoculum causing gray leaf spot of maize. On nutrient-deficient substrates, but not on water on the leaf surface, conidia germinate and develop secondary conidia on conidiophores produced from germ tubes or conidial cells. A population of conidia increases its numbers more than twofold by 2 days on the surface of a water droplet and by ...
متن کاملMicrocyle Conidiation in Filamentous Fungi
The typical life cycle of filamentous fungi commonly involves asexual sporulation after vegetative growth in response to environmental factors. The production of asexual spores is critical in the life cycle of most filamentous fungi. Normally, conidia are produced from vegetative hyphae (termed mycelia). However, fungal species subjected to stress conditions exhibit an extremely simplified asex...
متن کاملVisualizing nuclear migration during conidiophore development in Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus oryzae: multinucleation of conidia occurs through direct migration of plural nuclei from phialides and confers greater viability and early germination in Aspergillus oryzae.
Nuclear migration is indispensable for normal growth, differentiation, and development, and has been studied in several fungi including Aspergillus nidulans and Neurospora crassa. To better characterize nuclear movement and its consequences during conidiophore development, conidiation, and conidial germination, we performed confocal microscopy and time-lapse imaging on A. nidulans and Aspergill...
متن کاملWetA is required for conidiogenesis and conidium maturation in the ascomycete fungus Fusarium graminearum.
Fusarium graminearum, a prominent fungal pathogen that infects major cereal crops, primarily utilizes asexual spores to spread disease. To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying conidiogenesis in F. graminearum, we functionally characterized the F. graminearum ortholog of Aspergillus nidulans wetA, which has been shown to be involved in conidiogenesis and conidium maturation. Deletion o...
متن کاملIn vitro activity of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil against dermatophytes and other filamentous fungi.
The in vitro activity of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil against dermatophytes (n = 106) and filamentous fungi (n = 78) was determined. Tea tree oil MICs for all fungi ranged from 0.004% to 0.25% and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) ranged from <0.03% to 8.0%. Time-kill experiments with 1-4 x MFC demonstrated that three of the four test organisms were still detected after 8 h of t...
